Beethoven's egmontOverture and incidental music written for Goethe's play Egmont.
Ludwig Van Beethoven (1770 -1827) Egmont, complete incidental music, Op.84 (1810) “An impassioned and heroically defiant musical expression of the triumph of freedom over oppression... Joy and sadness. Free will and oppression. Intense light and dark. By turns melancholic, explosive, contemplative, triumphant, sad, even sweet; Beethoven's complete incidental music for Goethe’s Egmont flings the listener into battle alongside Egmont, fighting for freedom, negotiating love and loss. It moves in rapid mood swings through the drama with billowing militaristic crescendos and sorrowful laments, arriving ultimately at Egmont’s death, celebrated in Siegessymphonie - allegro con brio - a victory symphony worthy of any Romantic hero.
A political tragedy drawn in heroic and visionary terms, Egmont is also a drama of love and loss on a human level – My thanks to all involved for allowing me the privilege to draw as you rehearsed. Academy of Ancient Music
