SEA CANTO (winter 2018/19)

Picture
Necessary Angels, oil on canvas, 250 x 140cm, 2018-19
Relying on a collision of the physical and the spiritual, these large-scale canvases (each is 2.5m long), combine to form one work: a 'Sea Song', a spiritual journey, in and of the sea, yet created without reference to any real landscape or pre-extant visual representation.

At once a reminder of our complex connections with the sea and of its - and our own - vulnerabilities, Sea Canto is also closely related  to my In Limine project, a vast open metaphor which lingers on the edge of imperceptible boundaries. Always in flux, highly tactile, revelatory and  - I hope ultimately - restorative grounds for reflection.

Necessary Angels
Yet I am the necessary angel of earth,
Since, in my sight, you see the earth again,

Cleared of its stiff and stubborn, man-locked set,
And in my hearing, you hear its tragic drone

Rise liquidly in liquid lingerings,
Like watery words awash, like meanings said
By repetitions of half meanings.

(Wallace Stevens 'Angel Surrounded by Paysans')
