The Rite of Spring

elements (2016/2017 ONGOING)

The drawings collected together as Elements  relate strongly to works which I was making before my encounter with Stravinsky, exploring psychological and emotional landscapes and the edges between states of being (see Between Three Worlds).

The Rite is explosive, elemental, highly reactive. Earth, air, fire and water seem to collide in volcanic explosions which then drop abruptly, leaving just burnt residue in whispers of sound - battered, appalling and yet somehow beautiful. In the Element  drawing series,  figures are thrown through restless and turbulent landscapes, the surfaces marked and scarred by their desperate dance.
